Big Green, formerly The Kitchen Community, founded by Hugo Matheson and Kimbal Musk, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening community through food. We build Learning Gardens in schools around Memphis, connecting kids to real food and empowering them to make healthier food choices.
Learning Gardens give students ample exposure to the life cycle of fruits and vegetables so that the next time they see them in the cafeteria, they'll be more likely to take, taste, and enjoy them. They are the platform from which we leverage the power of real food so that every child will have the opportunity to learn, play, and grow in a healthy community.
To date, Big Green has built 99 Learning Gardens in Memphis and is reaching 57,000 students everyday. Since we began in Memphis, we have seen enormous growth and positive change in the schools in which we work, and that change has been contagious; the demand for Learning Gardens continues to grow.
